Parent-child centre

For some time, we have been collaborating with Junior Rowe, the principal of the Riverton school, to establish a parent/child drop-in program to operate 2 or 3 days per week at the school facility.  We were fortunate to have been able to gather enough furniture, equipment, toys, and program supplies through the Container Project (see below) to allow this to happen. In September 2011, the construction of a new building to house the centre will be completed and the centre will be opened for families and their children. We are continuing to establish partnerships with Jamaican organizations that support learning through play and child-directed learning to contribute to the development of the project. While playing with their children at the centre, parents will learn the importance of play-based learning and how to support their children’s efforts at literacy and numeracy skill-building. Interactive workshops will be offered for parents in many different areas including child development, problem-solving with children, and helping children to read.
